Studio ai architects was founded in New York in 2004 by licensed architects Lily Lim and Mateo Paiva. Both previously served as project managers at Rafael Viñoly Architects, overseeing large institutional and commercial projects across the United States, Asia, and Europe.

From the start, studio ai architects has worked on a broad range of projects — residential buildings, retail and office interiors — in New York, Argentina, Uruguay, Singapore, and Japan. In 2011 Louis Lim joined the practice and launched makingworks, an in-house furniture and design-build shop. In 2012 Esteban Erlich became part of the team; licensed in both Argentina and New York, he has contributed to major projects in South America and the United States and is also an illustrator and author of children’s books.

In 2015 the firm opened a Buenos Aires office with Rosario Murua and Jenny Harvey, located in malabia933, a building developed and designed by studio ai architects in Palermo Viejo. In 2022 a Tokyo office was established to support Japanese companies entering the New York market — handling design, permitting, and coordination with local real estate and construction partners — with Nobuyuki Tsukahara, a former colleague from Rafael Viñoly Architects, leading the office.

At studio ai architects, each project presents distinct design challenges addressed with straightforward, elegant solutions.
